Students at National Institute of Technology (NIT) will be able to take direct admission to IIT. This system will be effective from the month of July.

Under the new system, BE students at their final year (7th Semester) will be given admission in IIT on merit basis. The object of introducing this plan which is also called 'Lateral Entry' will help encouraging research work and also to make bright students from NIT do their final year from IIT. This will also encourage them to do Ph.D after completing their engineering.

However, admission will be provided to only those students whose performance has been exceptional in their last three years of engineering studies.
